Exercise and Divorce

Divorce or a relationship break-up is a stressful and an emotionally draining experience and the last thing you may think about is engaging in any physical exercise. However, engaging in regular physical exercise can be an effective way to cope with the associated stress and negative emotions.


Physical exercise releases feel-good chemicals like endorphins, which a can improve mood and reduce anxiety and depression. Physical activity can also serve as a healthy distraction from negative thoughts and provide a sense of control especially during times when you feel you are losing control or things are slipping from you.


Participating in physical exercise can also help men maintain a sense of routine and structure during times when our lives may feel chaotic and uncertain.  Furthermore, exercise can promote better sleep quality. A good night's sleep can improve mood, increase energy levels, and reduce stress and anxiety and improve cognitive ability which can aid effective decision making – If there’s one area we need to be on top of our game is during a divorce .or break up is decision making. One wrong decision can be costly.


Whether it's running, lifting weights, practicing yoga, or participating in team sports, if you are already involved in one, please please keep going if not, finding a form of physical activity that is enjoyable and sustainable can help promote physical and mental health during a difficult time like a divorce or break up especially if it’s been a long-term relationship
